There was
something rustling in the cornfield right next to Janine’s house.
It wasn’t
the wind.
It wasn’t
the dog . . . he’d run out there barking each night and come back
a few minutes later happy as can be.
Whatever
it was, each time Janine heard the faint scraping of the corn, her
stomach dropped. But what could an intruder want with their poor
old house, full of dust, broken spirits, and a sick little brother?
Then Mr.
Lunas comes to visit, a man as long and thin as a broomstick. Janine
doesn’t trust this strange fellow who she knows was the one in the
cornfield. What does he want with her family and why does he sleep
outside, staring at the moonlight, frozen like a statue?
Each day
that passes brings her little brother closer to the end of his sad
life, and Janine is ready for something big to happen. And it’s
just about to start . . .
